BSCP Child Neglect Workshop – 14th October 2021

Feedback on recent Child Neglect Workshop

On the 14th of October, the BSCP hosted a virtual Child Neglect Workshop with guest speaker, Dr Jenny Molloy.

The multi-agency workshop was attended by seventy staff from across the Partnership including local Charities, Health, Schools, Childrens Social Care, Family Support Service, Thames Valley Police and the Probation Service.

Dr Molloy gave an extremely thought provoking, candid reflection of her lived childhood experiences, from being a child experiencing neglect, her life under the care of Hackney Social Services and the dynamics between her and her siblings. Dr Molloy explained the emotions that accompanied her life, and how her behaviours where methods of, often missed, communication.

The content was raw and emotional, and at times difficult to hear. Dr Molloy’s delivery throughout the workshop was aimed at ‘you’ the individual audience member. This enabled the delegates to reflect on their own working practise and the lasting impact they have in the children’s lives they support.

The Feedback from delegates has all been extremely positive, below are some examples:

  • To hear the lived experience of Neglect is something that will stay with me and inform my practice.
  • I found the training incredibly emotional and raw, it was the most effective training that I have had in my 21 years in the local authority. Hearing from the child’s perspective of how difficult. services/authority made things, although unintentionally. Thank you Jenny for you open raw honesty, it will be invaluable to professionals to keep your family’s story in mind when doing their work.
  • It was one of the best Neglect workshops I’ve been on.
